Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. At the age of five her carnival barker father passed away which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning girl and waitress to feed the family.
